Music Brings Us Together

Hello! My name is Nicolas Perez and I am the Music Teaching Artist Assistant. We just completed our second week of the City Spotlights Leadership Program, and I am amazed by the amount of progress these teen leaders have made in such a small amount of time.
The music specialty group is on a roll right now! The music group composed a song for our full group sessions and all of the teen leaders learned the song this past Friday. They sound great and I am very excited for them to be performing their original composition at the State House this coming Thursday.
I have taught in many different music programs where at times I honestly just feel drained at the end of the session. That is not the case with this group of teens! I see how much they all truly love music and how important it is for them to have music in their lives. Music has always been an outlet for me to express myself and I see how that is true for many of them as well. We have so much fun working on their ideas that the sessions feel like they are getting shorter and shorter each day.
One thing that has really surprised me in the program is the amount of love and support everyone has shown to each other. I remember my first debrief with the teens and staff on day one. The amount of love everyone showed to each other was unexpected and I thought that it was just because everyone was excited since it was the first day of the program. I was seriously mistaken! Since day one, our debriefs at the end of the day have held that same amount of support and love for each other and it is beautiful to see that amongst all these young artists.
Also, I have to give a shout out to Will, Jeremy, and Guy! We make a great team and I am blessed to be able to work with them and learn from them.
